June Pitman-Hayes - Writer & Poet

June's interest in Creative Writing and Poetry sparked during her early school years when books became more accessible, and a teacher's love for Limerick exposed her to the sing-song, rhyming pattern of this particular poetic form.  As a mature student, June enrolled in Massey University's Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in English, and began studying various writing papers including Creative Writing, Poetry, NZ Writers & Their Regions.  Along the way, having studied the life and career of Ella Fitzgerald as part of the development of her own Ella Fitzgerald Tribute Show, June decided to expand her understanding of jazz by studying extramurally 'The History of Jazz' under Wellington-based jazz lecturer/musician Norman Meehan.  Part of this study included an comparison based essay.  June's choice to write about comparisons of the musical styles of Rachmaninoff and Oscar Peterson, helped secure an A- mark for this course of study.

June is a member of the NZ Society of Authors, NZ Book Council author, and a member of Storylines

Until recent years June's love of poetry has been expressed through the medium of lyric, as verse in greeting cards, and as personalised readings for  special occasions including weddings - birthdays - funerals - remembrances, etc.

In 2019 June became a first-time published poet with the inclusion of her work Inside a 1960's Cadbury's Chocolate Box in the Fast Fibres Poetry 6 - from Northland, collection.

June always intended to study Massey University's 'Writing for Children'  Summer School course,

but time and work commitments got in the way.  As fate would have it, in 2015 an opportunity presented which seeded an idea for a children's book with music, and the rest is history.  In 2017 June's first children's book with music Tawhirimatea, A song for Matariki written and sung in Te Reo Māori and English, was published by Scholastic NZ.  Every year since then a new title has found its way onto New Zealand's bookshelves, the most recent being Kia Kaha, Together Standing Strong .

Released to coincide with the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, little did we know that this book would find it's place in the homes of young children all over New Zealand, included as part of the Ministry of Education's educational resources for home learning during COVID-19 lockdown.

Many people find writing creative content difficult.  June will happily work to a brief in creating content that meets client needs.
